2023 MLB Draft Report: Players to follow during NCAA Regionals

Oct 09, 2023

NCAA Regionals is one of my favorite baseball weekends on the calendar because there's so much going on. We are in the midst of MLB season, and postseason games will begin at 11:00 AM CT for the 16 Regionals. It makes for a great day having multiple screens and a comfy couch.

To help follow along with the action regarding the 2023 MLB Draft is a list of players from each school to track. Some could be options for the Chicago White Sox at Pick 15, and many will be names you’ll hear in the later rounds. It's always fun to look back at these guides to check how many players the White Sox selected. In last year's College World Series guide, they did choose Texas A&M reliever Jake Palisch.

Wake Forest: 3B Brock WilkenFirmly in the "Ball in Air" camp, Brock Wilken for Wake Forest had quite the offensive season. He finished hitting .351/.515/.832 with 27 HR and 74 RBI. Many mock drafts have Wilken dropping to the first round compensation or even later into the second round. I can understand if the White Sox don't take Wilken with Pick 15, but if he were to fall to them in the second round, I think that would be a great get.

Maryland: SS Matt Shaw (FutureSox Profile)There's early word that college bats are expected to fly off the board in next month's first round, and Maryland's Matt Shaw is a name now being discussed as a Top 15 prospect. While I’m not sold on his future playing shortstop, the bat can play. Shaw was the best hitter at Cape Cod in 2022, and followed that up by bashing 23 HR for Maryland.

Northeastern: RHP Griffin YoungAs a graduate student, pitchers like Griffin Young are targets by teams in offering $20,000 signing bonuses in the Top 10 rounds as a savings measure to go overslot earlier in the draft. Young is one of Northeastern's more dependable relievers as he covered 46.0 innings and posted a 2.15 ERA with 53 strikeouts to 10 walks.

George Mason: LHP Ben ShieldsAnother graduate student option, George Mason's Ben Shields struck out 102 batters in 74.1 innings this season and opposing batters hit just .197 against him.

Regional Pick: Wake Forest – the last time a #1 overall seed to win the College World Series was Miami back in 1999. While it may feel like having the #1 seed is a kiss of death, this Demon Deacon squad is talented and has pitching depth to go all the way.

Florida: RHP Brandon SproatI recently wrote about Hurston Waldrep, but I think Florida's other starting pitcher should also be on the White Sox radar. Brandon Sproat has come up big for Florida in his career. In 15 starts, Sproat finished with a 4.71 ERA covering 84.0 innings with 106 strikeouts to 36 walks. While the overall numbers don't scream first-rounder, Sproat has thrown multiple fastballs in the upper 90's mph and even hitting 100 mph. It's an electric arm that could be on the board in Round 2.

UConn: UTL David SmithInjuries held UConn's David Smith to just 38 games played in 2023 as he finished the regular season and Big East conference tournament hitting .286/.430/.468. Smith has the ability to play both in the infield at second base and has good enough athleticism to play left field. Kind of a Danny Mendick-type.

Texas Tech: RHP Brandon BeckelWith 21 appearances and six saves on his record, Texas Tech's Brandon Beckel is a college reliever that teams will consider between Rounds 8 – 15. He has the ability to hit 95 mph with the four-seamer but word out of Lubbock is Beckel getting close to 50% whiff rate on his breaking stuff. With 64 strikeouts in 44.2 innings of work, expect to see Beckel come in high leverage situations for Texas Tech when they need a strikeout.

Florida A&M: OF Ty JacksonA short and stout frame at 5’8" 190 lbs, Florida A&M's Ty Jackson had a successful 2023 campaign hitting .374/.479/.528 with 4 HR 30 RBI. As the Rattlers leadoff hitter, Jackson's performance will be critical if Florida A&M is looking to make noise in the Gainesville Regional.

Regional Pick: Florida – I think the Gators roster is the nation's best and I would be shocked if they don't reach Omaha. They are my pick to win the College World Series.

Arkansas: OF Jace BohrofenDespite the strikeout rate (56 K to 30 BB), Arkansas OF Jace Bohrofen is the best draft eligible hitter in this class. In 56 games, Bohrofen hit .318/.440/.601 as he bashed 14 home runs and 14 doubles.

TCU: 3B Brayden TaylorAfter a fast start, Brayden Taylor saw his season batting average drop to .233 after a 0-for-4 game against Kansas. Since then, Taylor has caught on fire raising his average to .305 while posting a 1.080 OPS thanks to 21 home runs. It's a deep crop of college third baseman in this draft, and Taylor's power left-handed swing makes him one of the best.

Arizona: OF Chase DavisA name with a lot of helium on draft boards is Arizona's Chase Davis. He finished 2023 with 21 HR and 74 RBI while hitting .369/.496/.757. We’ll see how Davis fares against TCU in the opening game as there's some question about the quality of Pac-12 pitching this season. If Davis has a big Regional, he might be on the White Sox radar at Pick 15.

CHASE. DAVIS. pic.twitter.com/nsKLBUQjbq

Santa Clara: RHP Skylar HalesIn 20 appearances with 19 out of the bullpen, Skylar Hales struck out 64 batters in 51.1 innings. His four-seam fastball is mostly at 94 mph, but I wonder with the extra adrenaline boost of postseason baseball we see Hales hit higher marks. Another college reliever option in later rounds.

Regional Pick: Arkansas – What a tough draw for the Razorbacks. There's a lot of controversy about having Arizona make the tournament thanks to endless debates about RPI, but that's a hot team. TCU has been inconsistent, but they can play with the best teams in the country. It won't be easy for Arkansas, but I think home field advantage will help them prevail.

Clemson: C Cooper IngleThe Chicago White Sox need help with catching depth and Clemson's Cooper Ingle could be a good target after the fourth round. Ingle has a good batter's eye and is a tough strikeout as he hit .336/.427/.477 for the Tigers in 2023. More doubles than home run power.

Tennessee: OF Jared DickeyIt would be great if RHP Chase Dollander somehow fell into the White Sox lap at Pick 15, but if that's not the case, maybe someone like Jared Dickey makes sense in the later rounds. He's played mostly corner outfield, but has caught a few games for Tennessee in his college career. In 54 games for the Vols, Dickey hit .343/.411/.578 with 12 HR and 46 RBI.

Charlotte: OF Cam FisherA draft eligible sophomore, Charlotte's Cam Fisher lead NCAA D-1 with 30 home runs in 2023. He's very much a true three outcomes type of hitter with a slash line of .350/.507/.827 as Fisher drew 61 walks but struck out 57 times. Both totals are above 20% of his at-bats. Still, I think Fisher is worth taking in the second to third rounds as power is a premium trait every team is seeking.

Cam Fisher is a FREAK‼️7 straight games with a HR, 6 in the CUSA Tournament and 30 on the season!! Unbelievable 🔥 pic.twitter.com/F8OUzPVNUA

Lipscomb: LHP Logan Van TreeckLipscomb has some big hitters in Kelly Austin and Alex Vergara who have both hit 21 home runs this season, but my eye is on southpaw pitcher Logan Van Treeck. He made 16 appearances, nine of those starts, but racked up an impressive 82.1 innings with 101 strikeouts to 13 walks.

Regional Pick: Clemson – Just like Arkansas, Clemson does not get an easy draw. Tennessee will be very motivated and has the starters to win this Regional. Charlotte and Lipscomb could surprise by picking up wins, too. I’m going with the hot hand as Clemson enters the Regionals with one of the longest active winning streaks.

LSU: RHP Ty FloydObviously, OF Dylan Crews and RHP Paul Skenes will draw the most attention but from a White Sox point-of-view I’m looking at RHP Ty Floyd. Filling in for Grant Taylor who had Tommy John surgery before the season, Floyd pitched 66.2 innings in 2023 with a 4.59 ERA striking out 76 and walking 28 batters. His fastball is mostly between 92-94 mph, and could be a good target for the second or third round.

#1 LSU clinches yet another SEC victory with an 8-4 win over Ole Miss today. Ty Floyd was excellent with 8 Ks to 1 BB and 3 ER across 8.1 innings pitched. Dylan Crews paced the offense going 3-for-5 with 2 HRs and 6 RBIs. pic.twitter.com/A62ZHovT5y

Oregon State: 1B Garrett ForresterThree years of solid production at Oregon State, Garrett Forrester is entering this Regional hitting .330/.479/.521. His approach at the plate reminds me a little of Zack Collins, the White Sox former first round pick in 2016. Forrester is very patient at the plate and does a good job of reaching on base. But if Oregon State is going to pull off an upset, they need some impact hits from Forrester.

Sam Houston: OF Joe RedfieldHitting .408/.491/.678, Joe Redfield led Sam Houston with 13 home runs while collecting 95 hits this season. He and graduate student Tyler Davis lead the offensive charge. Both could cause headaches for pitchers in this Regional.

Tulane: LHP Dylan CarmoucheThis year's Cinderella, Tulane went 19-40 in 2023 but won their Conference Tournament to earn a spot in Regionals. Lefty Dylan Carmouche could get the ball in Game 2 for Tulane which should be a win or go home situation for the Green Wave. In 86 innings, Carmouche struck out 100 batters in 2023.

Regional Pick: LSU – I’m a bit worried about LSU's overall pitching depth, but their offense is too good not to win this Regional.

Vanderbilt: Enrique Bradfield Jr. You can check out my report on Enrique Bradfield Jr. from his SEC Tournament play. There's quite a bit of pressure on Bradfield Jr. and Vanderbilt to take care of business at home, and move on to Super Regionals.

Oregon: 3B Sabin CeballosA junior college transfer, Sabin Ceballos has hit wherever he's played. Part of San Jacinto's JUCO World Series team in 2022, Ceballos had a good season with Oregon hitting .342/.439/.637 with 15 HR and 61 RBI.

Sabin Ceballos gives the Ducks the lead in the 10th! 💥@OregonBaseball | #Pac12BSB pic.twitter.com/9XAlB4Zbg4

Xavier: RHP Ethan BosackerIf the X-Men are going to pull off the Regional upset, they’ll need their starting pitchers to continue carrying the load like they have all season. That starts with senior RHP Ethan Bosacker, who threw 89 innings in 15 starts with a 3.84 ERA and 95 strikeouts.

Eastern Illinois: RHP Zane RobbinsA college reliever, Zane Robbins has 18 career saves with Eastern Illinois and had an impressive 2023 campaign. In 26 appearances, Robbins threw 32.2 innings with 50 strikeouts and a 1.38 ERA.

Regional Pick: Vanderbilt – I thought the Dores got a pretty favorable Regional draw and a path to Omaha paired with the Stillwater Regional.

Virginia: 3B Jake GelofKyle Teel has a lot of helium and is expected to be selected within the first ten picks. While I don't expect Teel to be available for the White Sox at Pick 15, his teammate Jake Gelof could be in the second round. Gelof posted another 20+ HR campaign and added 20 doubles to his extra-base total. He's a solid bat that's known to get hot and help carry Virginia's offense for weeks at a time. Gelof's stock could rise during postseason play.

Jake Gelof ties the UVA baseball career homeruns record, with his second homerun of the game! Virginia now leads Miami, 6-2 @JakeGelof @UVABaseball pic.twitter.com/LX6wdaVNun

East Carolina: RHP Josh GroszJosh Grosz was a full-time starter for the Pirates making 15 starts pitching 74 innings. His four-seam fastball mostly sat between 91-93 mph, but I wonder with his body frame at 6’4" 200 lbs if there isn't a chance to gain a couple of ticks. A good target after the fifth round.

Oklahoma: OF Bryce MadronTeams looking at adding players to their pipeline who have an affinity of drawing walks, Oklahoma's Bryce Madron should be a target. Madron hit .308/.471/.553 with 11 HR and 45 RBI but had 59 walks to 36 strikeouts in 2023.

Army: INF Kevin DubruleMilitary commitments are difficult to gauge when it comes to the MLB Draft. Noah Song was selected in the fourth round out of the US Naval Academy in 2019, and is currently on the 60-day IL for Philadelphia after being taken in the Rule 5 Draft. Song hasn't pitched in a professional game since 2019 and it's not clear when he will again. Perhaps not for draft reasons, but watch senior infielder Kevin Dubrule. In 219 at-bats, Dubrule has only struck out 11 times in 2023 with a slash line of .411/.460/.630.

Regional Pick: Virginia – Just like Vanderbilt, I’m a bit surprised with how this Regional got stacked together and I see a path to Omaha for Virginia.

Stanford: 2B Tommy TroyHailing from Kenny Williams alma mater at Stanford, Tommy Troy has displayed good contact skills by almost hitting .400 in 2023 (finished at .394). Troy is not much of a walker, but did a considerable job in improving that metric in 2023 with 26 walks to just nine in 2022. More power was also flashed from Troy as he belted 14 home runs and 15 doubles. With teams hungry for college bats in the first round, expect to hear Troy's name called on Day 1.

Oh my god, Tommy Troy. pic.twitter.com/Tjfmg2V1za

Texas A&M: RHP Nathan DettmerThere were high expectations for Nathan Dettmer in 2023, and he's fallen way short of meeting the hype. In 16 starts for the Aggies, Dettmer threw 66.2 innings with a 6.34 ERA and a really bad strikeout to walk ratio (57 K to 40 BB). Still, I think there are tools here to work with as Dettmer has a two-seam fastball that can hit 93 mph paired with a slider that generates a good deal of grounders. Worth a flier starting in the third round.

Cal. State Fullerton: C Cole UrmanThe Titans are not known for their offense but looking for catching depth in the later rounds there will be Cole Urman. He's posted impressive pop times behind home plate ranging from 1.9 to 2.0 seconds, and with the new MLB rules, we know arm strength will be a critical skill for pro catchers moving forward. Urman's hitting .269/.305/.374 this season, so this is strictly a defensive addition.

San Jose State: 2B Charles McAdooAnother potential super utility type of player, Charles McAdoo had a solid 2023 campaign but it was a step back from his 2022 performance. He hit .314/.396/.502 for San Jose State with 7 HR and 44 RBI. He's 6’3", which is a bit tall for a second baseman. I’m curious about his lateral movement and arm strength. Perhaps McAdoo could find time in left field when he turns pro.

Regional Pick: Texas A&M – A new rule I’m following is if I doubt a Regional host's overall potential (Stanford), and they have an SEC team in their group, pick the SEC team to win.

Miami: 3B Yohandy MoralesThe White Sox had interest in Yohandy Morales out of high school, and there's gossip they are still intrigued by him at Pick 15. Morales hit .405/.477/.680 for the Canes with 16 HR and 61 RBI. A big Regional performance could solidify Morales standing as a Top-15 pick in this year's draft.

this is some ridiculous oppo juice from Miami 3B Yohandy Morales. the bat speed has always been there but he's just so much bigger/stronger now than he was as a HS prospect. not every team will love the profile but should still be a top-40 pick this Julypic.twitter.com/v6EDdHaaGZ

Texas: RHP Tanner WittIt has not been a smooth rehab for Tanner Witt since season ending Tommy John surgery in 2022. That news last year was a big blow for Texas as Witt struck out 14 in his first two starts and it was coming off his impressive freshman season in which he posted a 3.16 ERA pitching out of the bullpen. In four starts as an opener, Witt has an 8.22 ERA with six strikeouts and six walks. Control has been an issue as he's breaking off rust. Still, Witt does have a four-pitch offering and has displayed plus-velocity in the past. Similar situation to when the White Sox drafted Peyton Pallette last year.

Louisiana: OF/1B Carson RoccaforteAfter a good 2022 campaign where Carson Roccaforte hit 16 HR with a slash line of .374/.435/.671, it was a step backwards in 2023. In 62 games, Roccaforte hit .309/.422/.511 with just 6 HR but with 25 doubles. For the Ragin’ Cajuns, Roccaforte has been mostly playing first base but has time in the outfield.

Maine: 2B Quinn McDanielA solid defender with a surprisingly good batter's eye, Quinn McDaniel leads Maine into the Regionals. In 51 games, McDaniel is hitting .355/.520/.699 with 16 HR and 60 BB. I’m curious what he can do against Miami's pitching in the opening round. Might be a good 10th round target.

Regional Pick: Louisiana – UPSET. Miami has been good at home but the Ragin’ Cajuns have recently beaten Coastal Carolina in tournament play, and I watched them beat LSU when they were ranked #1 earlier this season. They play great defense and have a knack of big hits late.

Coastal Carolina: RHP Teddy SharkeyOne of the nation's top college relievers and a nominee for Stopper of the Year, Coastal Carolina's Teddy Sharkey has been great in 2023. In 25 appearances, Sharkey has a 2.68 ERA with 10 Saves and a 7-1 W/L record. In 47 innings of work, Sharkey has 69 strikeouts to 17 walks and opposing hitters are batting .201 against him. It's a four-seam fastball that sits at 95 mph with a slider that hovers around 84 to 86 mph.

Duke: SS Alex MooneyA draft eligible sophomore, Alex Mooney has improved quite a bit from 2022. He's cleaned up defensively at shortstop while hitting .330/.446/.529 with 8 HR. I don't expect big power from Mooney professionally, but he's firmly in the second to third round territory range.

UNC-Wilmington: 3B Jac CroomA redshirt junior, Jac Croom had a big performance against Northeastern in the CAA Championship game where he went 3-for-4 with a two-run HR. Croom in 55 games hit .363/.431/.528 with 7 HR for UNC-Wilmington.

Rider: RHP Danny KirwinWith 14 Saves in 2023, Rider's Danny Kirwin is another option for a $20,000 signing bonus as he's a Graduate Student. Command can be a problem at times for Kirwin but he struckout 64 batters in 46.2 innings this year.

Regional Pick: Coastal Carolina – Duke is going to be a tough test, but this Chanticleers team keeps finding a way to win late in the season. I don't think they are as good as the National Champion squad back in 2016, but Coastal Carolina will surprise people.

Oklahoma State: RHP Juaron Watts-BrownWatching Juaron Watts-Brown on Opening Day, he reminded me of Marcus Stroman. When Watts-Brown is on, it's big strikeout totals as he punched out 117 batters in 78.0 innings. The bad days are when Watts-Brown loses the strike zone as he had six starts with four or more walks in 2023. If Oklahoma State wants to get to Omaha, they need Watts-Brown to be on his A-game.

Made it over to Ann Arbor to get a look at Oklahoma State and the Wolverines. Juaron Watts-Brown was 90-92 in a scoreless first. Good looking slider at 83-84. pic.twitter.com/CjiQDPpC9s

Dallas Baptist: LHP Bryson HammerIt's been an uneven season for Bryson Hammer who in Junior College last year struck out 116 batters thanks to his effective secondary pitches (changeup and curveball). Pitching for Dallas Baptist, Hammer has only made 13 appearances with eight starts and pitched 44.1 innings. While that's not a normal workload, Hammer was hit hard at times and showed below average command. His season ERA was 5.28 and he had 46 strikeouts to 30 walks. Hammer falls into the 5th to 10th round range where a team can work on his command and add to their starting pitching depth.

Washington: RHP Keifer LordAnother starting pitcher with a rocky 2023 season, Washington's Keifer Lord finished with a 5.60 ERA in 14 starts with 72.1 innings pitched. He did have a good strikeout to walk ratio (75 K to 17 BB), but opposing batters did have 76 hits against Lord. In his past 10.1 innings of work, Lord has allowed 20 earned runs to Oregon and Cal. But in his start on April 22 vs. Stanford, Lord went 8 scoreless innings allowing just three hits and striking out 10.

Oral Roberts: RHP Cade DentonA nominee for Stopper of the Year, Oral Roberts closer Cade Denton has posted eye-opening numbers in 2023. In 28 appearances, Denton has 12 Saves and in 50.2 innings has struck out 68 batters to walking eight batters. Leans heavily on a four-seam and slider combination.

Regional Pick: Oklahoma State – the Cowboys have the most talent in this Regional. Now, can it all come together? We’ll see. This is a shaky pick from me.

Kentucky: RHP Zack LeeFrom Effingham, Illinois, Kentucky senior RHP Zack Lee leads the Wildcats rotation. In 14 appearances, Lee pitched 60.1 innings with a 3.58 ERA. Lee was tremendous against South Carolina on May 7, 2023 when he struck out 12 in 6.2 innings.

West Virginia: RHP Carlson ReedAs West Virginia's closer, Carlson Reed in 23 appearances had 7 Saves in 36 innings with a 1.50 ERA. Reed struck out 57 batters to 24 walks and opposing batters hit .215 against him. It's a good four-seam fastball that sits in the mid-90's, but batters have a terrible time picking up his slider and changeup. A good college reliever option in the later rounds.

Indiana: SS Phillip GlasserIndiana Hoosiers best players are too young to be draft eligible this year, but Phillip Glasser plays the "Old Man" role well in that clubhouse. He's been the Hoosiers leadoff hitter and has done well batting .351/.443/.508 with 6 HR and 19 doubles.

Ball State: RHP Ryan BrownOne of the craziest pitching lines I’ve seen came from Ball State's Ryan Brown to start the season. Against Charlotte, Brown went 4.2 scoreless innings on 103 pitches and only allowed one hit. He struck out 10 in that game but walked nine batters. Command can be an issue but Brown has some impressive strikeout material thanks to his changeup.

Regional Pick: West Virginia – I’m not crazy about this Kentucky team and West Virginia has been better than expected in 2023. Indiana is the wild card. They can hit, but pitching has been very inconsistent.

Auburn: SS Cole FosterStrikeouts have been a problem for Auburn shortstop Cole Foster, but he's at least increased the power production in 2023. In 53 games, Foster has 13 home runs and 13 doubles, which equals to six more extra base hits he had in 2022. In the same amount of games, Foster has 26 more hits than a year ago. Defensively, Foster has a shot staying at the shortstop position as he shows good lateral range.

Southern Miss: RHP Tanner HallCircle Tanner Hall's name for White Sox target in the second or third rounds. Hall had a tremendous 2022 season and has been just as good in 2023. Best part for Southern Miss is their ace is on fire. In his last five starts, Hall has pitched 39 innings allowing only five runs (four earned) with five walks and 55 strikeouts(!). While Hall doesn't possess the tantalizing velocity, his command is 60-grade.

Tanner Hall. 5 shutout innings with 10 Ks vs Georgia Southern 🔥"Somebody get Rob Freidman on the phone" is a great call 😂@PitchingNinja pic.twitter.com/1P7kvQBna8

Samford: RHP Jacob Cravey Posting a 3.19 ERA in 15 starts, Samford's Jacob Cravey could give Southern Miss a tough time in the opening game. Cravey has a rubber arm in that he has three complete games in 2023 and had pitched 98.2 innings. It's a three-pitch mix for Cravey with four-seam, slider, and changeup that's helped him strikeout 121 batters this season.

Penn: 3B Wyatt HenselerPenn is a long shot in this Regional. If they are going to win any games they need their slugger to have a great weekend. Wyatt Henseler hit .316/.385/.663 in 2023 with 17 HR and 60 RBI.

Regional Pick: Southern Miss – If you are looking for a darkhorse to reach Omaha, Southern Miss is a good pick. They have three dependable starters (Hall, Niko Mazza, and Billy Oldham) and slugger Slade Wilks (20 HR in 2023).

Indiana State: RHP Matt JachecIndiana State's starting rotation has been solid in 2023, but they don't strike out a lot of batters. RHP Matt Jachec has the best swing and miss stuff as he punched out 93 batters in 92.1 innings this season.

Iowa: RHP Brody Brecht (2024 MLB Draft)Throwing you the reader a curveball. The best 2023 MLB Draft prospect for Iowa is RHP Ty Langenberg who had a good season posting a 4.06 ERA in 71 innings. But Brecht has elite velocity, often hitting 100+ mph with his heater. He's considered a preseason Top 5 talent for the 2024 MLB Draft. With how the White Sox are currently struggling, it wouldn't hurt to look ahead.

North Carolina: 3B Mac HorvathJust like Iowa, we are watching the opening game as it’ll feature two of the best 2024 MLB Draft prospects in Brecht and North Carolina's Vance Honeycutt. But we shouldn't forget about Mac Horvath. He's hitting .305/.419/.704 as Horvath had a 20/20/20 season (22 HR, 20 2B, 24 SB). There's position flexibility in keeping Horvath in the dirt at third base or moving him to a corner outfield. Not many hitter showcase the level of power and speed as Horvath. Biggest question is if he can cut down on strikeouts?

Mac Horvath on Sunday: Called a players-only meeting and questioned the @DiamondHeels' care factor. On Tuesday morning: Got a stronger prescription for his left contact. In four games this week: Slashed .562/.619/1.563 with five homers and 19 RBIs over 21 plate appearances. pic.twitter.com/UK7Hw2MENp

Wright State: LHP Sebastian GongoraIndiana State will have a tough test facing Wright State's Sebastian Gongora. It's below average fastball velocity but gets plenty of spin paired with a curveball and changeup. In 2023, Gongora had a 2.99 ERA covering 81.1 innings striking out 74 while walking 30.

Regional Pick: North Carolina – I think the Tar Heels have the best top end talent in this Regional. How often Horvath and Honeycutt get on-base will determine how far North Carolina will go this postseason.

South Carolina: RHP Will SandersWord from South Carolina is Will Sanders will pitch in this Regional, and might be out of the bullpen as he recovers from a lower leg injury that made him miss almost a month of action. Watching Sanders earlier this season, he has the ideal pitcher's body frame but the quality of stuff was lacking. In 11 starts during 2023, Sanders had a 5.75 ERA. A significant step backwards from his 2022 season where it was a 3.43 ERA.

Campbell: RHP Cade KuehlerIn his last start against Gardner-Webb, Campbell's Cade Kuehler went seven scoreless innings only allowing two hits with no walks and striking out nine batters. All on 91 pitches, and lowered his season ERA to 2.82. Kuehler stays mid-90's mph with his compact throwing motion while flashing a variety of breaking pitches, and even a splitter.

A couple slow-mo videos of Campbell RHP Cade Kuehler from this evening. pic.twitter.com/rgzrHnNMTn

NC State: 1B LuJames (Gino) Groover IIIIn 2023, LuJames Groover III made it a point in reducing his strikeout total and was successful doing so cutting the rate almost in half. With 35 walks to 24 strikeouts, Groover demonstrated better plate discipline. Reducing the amount of swings I think is what caused his overall production to drop slightly, but Groover has been a solid college hitter in his career and should go in the first four rounds.

Central Connecticut State: LHP Dominic NimanDominic Niman was a workhorse for Central Connecticut State pitching 97.2 innings in 14 appearances. He improved his season ERA from 2022's 3.62 down to 2.76 in 2023 with 90 strikeouts to 24 walks.

Regional Pick: NC State – I have a hard time trusting South Carolina and this Regional is a toss up. I like NC State's offense better than Campbell's which is why I’m giving the nod to them.

Alabama: OF Andrew PinckneyA bit overshadowed by the other great SEC outfielders, Andrew Pinckney for Alabama is having a good season. In 59 games, Pinckney hit .350/.448/.650 with 16 HR and 54 RBI. Pinckney is very aggressive at the plate and attacks early in the count. It's a good reason why his strikeout to walk rate is not ideal (61 K to 35 BB), but the power is undeniable. So is the throwing arm.

Here's the play by Andrew Pinckney. Insane. pic.twitter.com/xMFN8W8VHP

Boston College: OF Travis HoneymanTravis Honeyman suffered a shoulder injury earlier in April that had him miss all of May. Boston College is hoping Honeyman will be available during Regionals. He's been a solid contributor hitting .304/.383/.534 with 6 HR in 39 games. If Honeyman can't go, that's a serious blow to Boston College's postseason chances.

Troy: OF Shane LewisA junior college transfer, Shane Lewis posted monster numbers for Troy hitting .291/.442/.733 with 27 home runs and 76 RBI. While Lewis has tremendous home run power, his all or nothing swing results in an ugly number of strikeouts (77).

Nicholls: OF Xane WashingtonLeading Nicholls offensively is outfielder Xane Washington who hit .379/.481/.551. It's more speed than power as Washington had 17 doubles to four home runs, but did swipe 16 bases in 19 attempts. Regional Pick: Alabama – I think Alabama is better than South Carolina and deserved a better seed. But they are paired with an injured Boston College squad which should make it easier on the Tide to reach Super Regionals.
